19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards 2008
Sally Field, T.R. Knight, Rachel Griffiths, Matthew Rhys, Garry Marshall, Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Kimmel, Sofia Vergara and Zoe Saldana were among the dozens of celebrities who joined the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) as it honored Janet Jackson, Rufus Wainwright, and Herb Ritts, and presented awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Comedy Series, and Reality Program at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles.
Kathy Griffin opened the show by inviting her mother, Maggie Griffin, onstage to quiz her about her knowledge of the LGBT community. Later in the show, Grammy Award-winning singer Joss Stone performed two songs for the near-capacity crowd of 2800 in the Kodak Theatre.
At the ceremony, Ellen DeGeneres presented Janet Jackson with GLAAD's Vanguard Award, honoring media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Also at the event, Sharon Stone presented the Stephen F. Kolzak Award to Rufus Wainwright. The Stephen F. Kolzak Award is presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community.
GLAAD also honored Herb Ritts with a posthumous Pioneer Award. The Pioneer Award is given to an individual, group, or media outlet that made a significant contribution to the development of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-inclusive media images prior to the creation of the GL AAD Media Awards. Tom Ford presented the award, and Cindy Crawford accepted on behalf of the Herb Ritts Foundation.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 25) - A Nashville man has been charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication after he repeatedly harassed Cher at the famed honky-tonk Tootsies Orchid Lounge.
Police say 36-year-old Calvin Hutton Houghland tried to make contact with Cher early Wednesday morning and was asked to leave the club. He complied, police said, but returned a short time later and grabbed Cher by the waist as the singer-actress sat in a roped-off area of the lounge.Houghland was escorted from the bar, but returned again. When security blocked his attempts to approach the singer, Houghland called police to say he'd been assaulted.Police say Cher declined to prosecute but Houghland asked to be arrested.Houghland failed a self-requested field sobriety test. His bond was set at $3,000.

Carly Simon Tells Howard Stern She's Not Gay, But Wishes She'd Tried
By Angela D'Amboise 6/19/2008 8:43 AM
She’s back with a brand new album—the highest debuting release of her career, thanks in part to a partnership with Starbucks—and now, 62-year-old Carly Simon is finally putting to rest those lesbian rumors that have followed her all these years.
After telling the gay press she “was not gay” in an interview a few months back, Simon went on to further explain on Howard Stern’s radio show earlier today.
"Have I made love to a woman? No. Now, I have been 'come on' to, but I was too uptight. But I wish that I had. I think that I'm too old for that (now). I have a fantastic boyfriend now who's almost a woman."
Simon wishing she’d made love to a woman in her life almost sounds like your standard Stern Playboy Bunny gimmick, but somehow, Simon kept the conversation serious and above the belt.
But according to Jenny Stewart at Gay.com, when talks turned to her tumultuous relationship with James Taylor, Simon spilled a bit more in the way of graphic details.
According to Simon, the former couple have not said two words to each other in over 30 years, despite the fact that they have a daughter together. In fact, when their daughter Sally was married at Taylor’s home recently, he wouldn’t let Simon use his restroom.
Puts a lot of those more recent Hollywood splits in perspective, doesn’t it?

PLAYBILL.COM'S BRIEF ENCOUNTER With Paulo Szot
By Robert Simonson27 May 2008
Few performers in recent Broadway history have made as instantaneous an impact with their debut role than has Paulo Szot, the Emile de Becque in Lincoln Center Theater's new revival of South Pacific.
The opera singer, a native of Brazil, has been hailed as magnetic, romantic, and altogether winning as the French farmer trying to forge a bond with Ensign Nellie Forbush amid a backdrop of war. He has been nominated for the Leading Actor in a Musical Tony Award and has already won Drama Desk, Theatre World and Outer Critics Circle Awards for his performance. The handsome, strapping Szot has performed with such opera companies as New York City Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Theatre National de Bordeaux, and Opera Marseille, but it's likely that he will now enjoy a dual career, shuttling back and forth between opera and theatre. And, as he tells it, if he had not been performing in Boston at the time LCT's call for auditions went out, South Pacific may never have found its male lead. The shy, humble performer spoke to Playbill.com (in increasingly fluent English) about his stroke of good fortune.
Playbill.com: What was it that caused you to audition for South Pacific in the first place?Paulo Szot: I received a call from my agent and he said they were looking for an opera singer. I was in Boston at that time doing Le Nozze di Figaro and I decided to come for this. It was very convenient. It was very close.
Playbill.com: So maybe if you had gotten the call when you were in Vienna or somewhere else far away, you might have never auditioned.PS: Exactly.
Playbill.com: Did you think at the time that, if they actually offered you the role, you would do it?PS: First of all, I didn't think they would give me the role. I was doing one of the many auditions I do whenever I am in town. I didn't think it would be very probable to hire a Brazilian to do a French role in the United States on Broadway, you know? (Laughs)
Playbill.com: Now that you've been in the role for some time, what is your impression of a life in the theatre, as opposed to a life in the opera?PS: These last four months have been incredible. I remember the first rehearsal at the theatre. I got home and I thought, I'm going to get the next flight back to São Paulo, because I was so afraid of everything. Somehow I stayed, because I had so many people who supported me at the theatre. I have to say I'm very pleased that I stayed. I was willing to do something new in my career. I've been singing opera for the last 12 years.
Playbill.com: Obviously you've been on many opera stages, but for someone with little theatre experience you seem very natural and confident on stage.PS: Well, I did not have any education on acting. I thought the only thing I could offer to the audience could be my honesty. I decided to be natural and honest with them, and that's the way I feel good on stage doing this new thing for me.
Playbill.com: What are the differences between singing for the theatre as opposed to the opera? Obviously, you have to eight shows a week in the theatre. You don't do that in opera.PS: No, I don't. That's the main challenge. I was not used to that. The physical aspect, that's the main thing. It's not vocally, it's just physical. The first weeks were very difficult. But I'm getting used to it and finally getting to enjoy it.
Paulo Szot in South Pacific
photo by Joan MarcusPlaybill.com: Is the music in South Pacific easier to sing than that in your average opera?PS: I think it's the same kind of energy I use singing a Don Giovanni performance or singing a South Pacific show. I think it's the same intensity. It's the only way I know how to do it.
Playbill.com: Do you have a favorite song in the score to sing?PS: Well, I do love "Some Enchanted Evening" very much. And, of course, "This Nearly Was Mine" is a special moment for me. It's a moment when I feel very connected to the audience and I do feel very emotional. I have to be careful.
Playbill.com: I felt that connection between you and the audience when I saw the show. It's unusual, a connection that palpable. It's not that easy to achieve.PS: I love that feeling. I think many things could be the reason for that. One of them is the audience is so close to the stage. The other is they're so familiar with all the songs and they're willing to hear them, because it's been a long time since they heard them on Broadway. I'm very glad to have this kind of connection with them. I feel them all the time, singing along, and that makes me very happy.
Playbill.com: I read that you had to cancel some opera roles in order to do this part. Now that's it's been extended, have you had to cancel still more operas?PS: I cancelled three operas in Brazil. But this is something that I really wanted to do and really wanted to continue. I'm finding this experience very nice as an artist. I'm feeling all the time it's changing and I'm feeling different things, so I really wanted to stay with the show a little longer.

City Hall helping same-sex couples tie the knot
California Update from Running Bear.
`
S. F. City worker Eileen Shields usually spends her days answering
questions about West Nile Virus, bed bugs and other health concerns, but
next week she'll be one of hundreds of volunteers at City Hall helping
same-sex couples tie the knot.
`
Shields, who works in the communications office at the city's Department
of Public Health, was inspired to help pronounce couples "spouses for
life" because her daughter married a woman in Massachusetts last year
and she wanted to help others share the same joy.
`
"Those are powerful words and it's a very solemn responsibility," said
Shields, who is volunteering on her own time.
`
On Monday, California is due to become the second state to allow gays to
marry, and county officials statewide are preparing for an expected
flood of weddings over the next several weeks. To help absorb the
crowds, they are adding staff, extending hours and training and
deputizing hundreds of volunteer marriage commissioners.
`
San Francisco expects to have trained more than 200 volunteer
commissioners, most of them city staff, to help marry same-sex couples.
In San Diego County, more than 50 workers from other departments within
the clerk-recorder's office have volunteered to issue licenses and to
keep up with demand. In Los Angeles County, about 100 people have been
deputized over the past two weeks to perform nuptials.
`
"We're expecting a crush of newlyweds," said Mayor Jeffrey Prang of West
Hollywood, where five city council members are expected to be deputized
Monday night so they can start performing ceremonies the next morning.

RUFUS DOES JUDY
Some Rufus information fromRunning Bear. [a Rufus fan] ` Product Description RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - RUFUS DOES JUDY AT CARNEGIE HALL - CD ALONG WITH A36-PIECE ORCHESTRA RE-CREATES JUDY GARLAND'S CELEBRATED 1961 CARNEGIEHALL CONCERT SONG-FOR-SONG ` On June 14, 2006, Rufus Wainwright took to the stage to recreate "theGreatest Show of All Time ever staged in honor of the Greatest Show ofAll Time"--Judy Garland's legendary 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall;song-for-song, in its original venue. Garland fanatics feared a fiasco, but the show was a triumph. His sophisticated act of homage to his herowas both a loving tribute and an arch commentary on the original, featuring classics like "Over The Rainbow," "Come Rain Or Come Shine"and "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart." ` Backed by a 36-piece orchestra and arranged by the Broadway famedStephen Oremus (Wicked, Avenue Q), Rufus's vocal talent soars over thoseclassic melodies on this 2-disc set. Also Available: RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - RUFUS! RUFUS! RUFUS! DOES JUDY! JUDY!JUDY! LIVE AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM -DVD ---------------------------------------------- A Tribute That's a Triumph!, December 4, 2007 By W. Kirchmeyer(Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews ` I was one of the fortunate audience members at the first incarnation ofthis show, at Carnegie Hall on June 14, 2006. I also had the greatpleasure (even though Rufus was not in his best vocal shape that night)of seeing the show re-created at the Hollywood Bowl in September, 2007. ` I wish I'd been able to go to London to see the show featured onthis DVD. Being a huge fan (along with millions of others!) of theoriginal concert Judy recorded, I was thrilled to have been able to seethe show in person twice and now I can re-live the excitement whenever Iwant, by watching the DVD. The DVD re-creates the thrill of being in theaudience. While the London crowd is a bit more subdued than the NY or LAcrowds were, the performance is first rate, with many of Rufie'shumorous anecdotes and top notch vocals. Also featured are performancesby Rufus' sister, Martha Wainwright, singing a spectacular "StormyWeather" and a duet of "After You've Gone" with Judy Garland's youngestdaughter, Lorna Luft. Kate McGarrigle, Rufus' mother, also makes dualappearances at the piano for "Over The Rainbow" and several selectionsduring the 'encore' portion of the show. Also something special is LornaLuft's encore, where she is visibly moved, after singing the song"Bluebird" which Judy sang (on the same Palladium stage) in her lastmovie, "I Could Go On Singing". While all of Rufus' songs are wonderful, especially notable are "That's Entertainment", "Come Rain or Come Shine"(Rufus quipped, after the Hollywood Bowl performance: "I'm glad this isthe last time I have to sing that one"), "If Love Were All", "Zing! WentThe Strings of My Heart", "Rock-a-bye You're Baby...", and, my twofavorites, "Chicago" and "San Francisco" (which he repeats as a finalencore). You will thoroughly enjoy this DVD if you are either a RufusWainwright or a Judy Garland fan. (or both!) I wish they had shot thevideo at Carnegie Hall, but having this London performance is truly agift I will enjoy many times. .............................................. www.rufuswainwright.cominfo. on Rufus plus tour schedule.

Madonna Shocked by Gay Brother Christopher Ciccone's Tell-All
By Allen Dale 6/12/2008
Madonna is shocked and dismayed by her gay brother Christopher Ciccone’s plans to pen a tell-all book about his mega-star sister’s life. And he’s doing it for the paycheck, Madonna said of her off-and-on recovering drug addict brother. Artistic director for Truth or Dare and then again for her Girlie Show Tour, Madonna has given her brother Christopher ample opportunity to clean up and keep his act clean. But the estranged pair is still at odds. “Madonna has helped Christopher since day one of her career," a source told blogger Perez Hilton. "She's put him in a music video, let him direct one of her tours, decorate her homes. She's given him millions of dollars." But despite the pop music icon’s attempts to save her brother, the pair have had a major falling out. Now Ciccone is set to cash in on his sister’s fame and fortune by revealing her deepest secrets in his book Life with My Sister Madonna, which is due out in July. "Christopher can't get work. He can't function. He's been evicted from his Miami apartment. He's broke. They took away his car. M's even offered to get him a job if he goes to rehab, but he still won't go. She’s never given someone more chances than Christopher Ciccone,” said Hilton’s source. The Associated Press reported that Madge’s gay brother Christopher has closed a deal with book publisher Simon & Schuster to ink a bio on her life—a bio her publicist reveals she’s not involved with. Life With My Sister Madonna will have an initial print run of 350,000 copies and chronicle Ciccone's 47 years of growing up with Madonna, the publisher said. No financial details were revealed. Ciccone will work closely with famed biographer Wendy Leigh, best known for her works on Liza Minnelli, Grace Kelly and a highly critical look at the life of Arnold Schwarzenegger. According to the singer’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, Ciccone and his sister are no longer close. No further information was given on their falling out.

Lorna as The Wicked Witch...
Later this year, Lorna Luft – the daughter of legendary screen Dorothy Judy Garland and sister of Liza Minnelli – will play the Wicked Witch of the West in another production of The Wizard of Oz, which runs at The Lowry outside Manchester for a Christmas season from 29 November 2008 to 3 January 2009.
In the UK, Luft’s stage credits include Babes in Arms at Chichester Festival last summer, White Christmas and her own concert show, Songs My Mother Taught Me, which had a West End season in 2004. Commenting on her new role, Luft said: “I’m so excited about performing in the show for which my mother is so well known. I can’t wait to play a baddie as it’s so different from anything I’ve done before. I always have such a good time in the UK, and I’m really looking forward to appearing on stage at The Lowry.”

Liza in Glasgow - review/how the day went...by Louise
I got into Glasgow for 3pm and made my way over to meet my friends Conor and Clare at their hotel. What a great pair they are. Very funny and friendly and very easy to talk to. We walked the reasonably short distance to the SECC and got to the stage door for about quarter to four. There was only a handful of people waiting, mainly autograph hunters in search of a Celebrity signature. Me met Neil there, He's a great guy. We went out for drinks after. Anyway, We were waiting for about half an hour when Billy Stritch came outside for a cigarette and turned the corner, away from everyone. I decided that it would be a good idea, and a morale boost for him, to go over and say Hi and conor came with me. He was so friendly and we chatted for about 10 minutes about the weather and when they were going back to New York and stuff like that. I showed him my picture of me with Liza and he remember who I was from the Sarasota Concert. He told me I looked beautiful and he gave me a big cuddle and told i him I'd see him later. A few minutes later we were told to move to the other door as Liza would be heading straight for the dressing rooms. She arrived at about 5.15, got out the car, shook Clares hand, then mine and then saw Conor and gave him a kiss and a cuddle. She didnt have time to sign anything right there and then but we were told to hand stuff to her Manager and she'd sign the backstage. So she went to her dressing room and conor was allowed to go back. Conor did ask Ron, Liza's choreographer, If I could come back too. He had said No originally but once he was inside, he asked Liza and Liza said it would have been fine but by that time the doors had been closed and sound checks were getting underway so I would be going backstage after the concert anyway but Ron made sure Conor told me that it would be a definite, considering I didn't get to watch the rehearsal. Liza's manager came out about half an hour later so I got my picture back all signed. Conor came out at about 6.15 and we went back to the hotel, had drinks and then made our way back to the SECC. We had a quick drink and took our seats. I was sitting up on the lower circle while Conor and Clare where on the ground level. Liza was fantastic. really skinny, superb voice, very reminicent of her radio city days and she just gave it her all. She opened with Teach me tonight which was fantastic! Everyone was up on their feet. I cant remember exactly what she sang but I know she did My ship has sailed, Mammy, sara lee (which everyone just adored) maybe this time, the man I love and a few more that I can't remember. She finished the end of the first act with Cabaret. I ran down to Conor at Intermission to say Hi and he told me Alan Cumming was sitting right infront of him. I went out for a smoke and as I was coming back in, I ran into Alan Cumming! lol I shook his hand and he introduced me to his boyfriend, He went for a pee and I took my seat. Second half was terrific, as usual. the four dancers portraying the Williams brothers were better than last year and they sang and danced there asses off. Liza of course ended the show with New York New York. At the very end of the show, I made my way down to meet Conor and luckly enough Alan was still in his seat so I got a quick picture with him and his autograph which is signed on the back page of the my September play script as I had no paper! lol I'll Scan it and put it on the group page. Conor, Clare, Neil and I waited in the auditorium along with people that had won the television comp and Liza's managers decided it would be far more easier to bring Liza out than bring everyone in. She came out and was very chatty, saying she loved Scotland and how beautiful it was. She stood right next to me, brushing her arms against mine a few times and I turned to her and said "Everybody here just adores you. You can see that." She said "Oh thank you, I just love it here." then she tapped my arm with her hand lol She didnt have any time for pictures, which I was disappointed about, so she quickly signed a few peoples things and went away. I asked one of the security guards to let Johnny Rodgers know that I was waiting to see him and he was expecting me so he came out and we had big cuddles and kisses, got my picture with him and we just chatted about how he's liked Glasgow and the UK tour and how it was good to see him again. As you all know Angie and I have met him twice before and he's just a doll. Very quiet and so cute. He went away and I forgot to give him my CD so I gave it to one of the security guards to give to him. Afterwards we wenty back round to the stage door and saw Liza come out. There were alot of people waiting to see her but she said something like "Bye Babies! thank you for coming! Ill be back!" She gave me a quick wave and blew kisses and then she got in the car. There was a little disabled girl who was wheeled up to the car door and liza gave her a big hug and a kiss and signed her stuff. Then she was gone.We went back to the hotel, dumped our stuff and went for another drink before heading to a club for some partying. Clare rocks on the dance floor! lol We practically never stopped! Of course we requested Liza and got "Losing My Mind" played to the delight of many!! Went to Macdonalds at 3am with Clare, phoned a taxi and was home for 4am.Overall:Met with Billy Stritch and got a big cuddleMet Liza twice and shook her hand and got patted lolGot pic signedMet Alan CummingGot pic and autograph with Alan CummingMet up with Johnny Rodgers got pic taken and gave CD to himI am a little disappointed as the time we had with Liza was so rushed and I guess I am a little disappointed I didnt get to watch her rehearse. But, I have met her twice before and had wonderful experiences with her last year so I really shouldn't complain. All in all, I've seen her in Concert 5 times, been in the audience for a live tv show when she was guest staring and Ive met her 4 times. That cant be bad for a 21 year old girl from Scotland can it? by Louise Scott.

Scatletts strange missing brother, by GARY
Dear gang of mine, since the response to my Atlanta Coca Cola picture was so nice and welcoming I thought I might share this one with you. While in Atlanta I also had the good fortune to visit the house where Margaret Mitchell wrote her famous Gone With The Wind. That evening I had an authentic southern dinner at a restaurant called Aunt Pity Pats Porch. Complete with an in door veranda filled with rocking chairs overlooking a downstairs dining room. The ambience was lovely and the theme was naturally Gone With The Wind with pictures artifacts everywhere. I just had to get into the action so for your enjoyment and hopefully a little chuckle here is a picture I like to call Scarletts strange missing brother. Have agreat day La LAAAAAAAAAAAAA La laaaaaaaaah(Gone With The Wind) the theme. All my love, Gary S from TBA =

What color will Liza wear at The Tony Awards? by BRYAN!
hmmmmm. While Red is a signature-color with Liza, and one she's incorporated in the tour....I'm not sure she'd do red at the Tonys.
(She is Truly a Person-of-the-Theatre, and so, I think, she might not want "Liza-Red" at this one...)
All that said: She won't be, uh, 'staid and proper', but it might be Classic black/easy, comfortable....she Is a Dancer...and B'way is a movement-area....
I think, that it might have Li's thinking, about what she's Presenting-for, , , and, , , well, Liza's personal wish-to-wear, , , , , I am gettin' a vibe, often, that because of RadioCityMusicHall, that Liza might opt for something in Yellow, because of her Dad, because of the Place.....and Holy Smokes! Would be Beautiful, , , by Bryan.

Gina Gershon
Just days after Vanity Fair hit shelves with a story suggesting former President Bill Clinton had become more than just riends with actress Gina Gershon, the Bound star hit back with a letter from her lawyer calling the accusation a pack of lies and saying she’d only ever been in the same room as the president three times—and other people were present. Here’s a pic of Gina at the Out 100 party before presenting Annie Lennox with an award. Does that mean she’s fucking Annie too?
In the two page letter drafted to Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, Gina’s lawyers say the actress is deeply “offended” by the accusations, has the utmost respect for the president and Senator Clinton and demands a retraction.
Rosie Says She's Waiting to Re-Tie Knot
Kelli Carpenter and Rosie O'DonnellWaiting to RemarryScoop: They wed in 2004, but that marriage was nullified by California's high court. Now, that same panel has changed their minds but O'Donnell says she and Carpenter will wait until gay marriage is "legal everywhere."

NEW YORK (June 5) - Ellen DeGeneres is doing it. So is George Takei. But Rosie O'Donnell isn't jumping at the chance to walk down the aisle.
O'Donnell and her girlfriend, Kelli Carpenter, were married four years ago when the mayor of San Francisco allowed same-sex marriages. The California Supreme Court later declared such marriages invalid. Now the state's highest court has ruled that denying same-sex marriages was discriminatory, and many gay and lesbian couples, including DeGeneres and girlfriend Portia de Rossi and Takei and his partner, Brad Altman, are planning to tie the knot.O'Donnell told AP Radio that she and Carpenter are "going to wait until it's legal everywhere, because otherwise, I said to Kelli, we'll be going around touring the country on the marriage tour every state by state.""Once it gets to be at the federal level, once every state recognizes the marriages of every other state, I think that'll be the time we would do it," the 46-year-old comedian said.Asked if she thought that time was near, O'Donnell replied, "Yes.""The same way it was illegal for black and white people to marry at one point and people couldn't conceive of that ever being different, I do think that two consenting, law-abiding adults who want to share their life together should be allowed to do that," she said.
